College and Career Running Program and NYRR Rising New York Road Runners at TAPCo!
Head Coach Social Worker Vanessa Velez
Assistant Coaches Social Worker interns Miranda Morency and Marcia Calle
Goals: To address social-emotional, physical, and academic needs for each student participating in the program. Each student will have a better understanding of what is needed to be successful in school and beyond, as well as develop a post-secondary plan. Teamwork is emphasized throughout the program, as well as developing goals and following through with commitments.
I. Practice
Students are offered practice 3x/week after-school and must attend at least 2 days a week.
II. College and Career Sessions
Once a week, during their school lunch period, they must also attend a session with varying themes.
Themes for weekly sessions include, but are not limited to the following topics:
Icebreakers/Team building every session
Teamwork
SMART goals
How to develop and stick to goals
Benefits of running
Nutrition - what to eat/what not to eat
Conflict Resolution
Time management
Organization
Struggles & successes in school
Networking (i.e. connecting with adults for letters of recommendation, or getting general support throughout academic career)
Planning for college visits
Career inventory
Recognizing strengths and interests to develop career plan
III. Individualized Support
Each student receives an individual meeting on a monthly basis to check in and see how they are doing in school, as well as personally. Progress reports are collected and academic success is tracked. There are also monthly teacher meetings and parent phone calls to address any other concerns that may arise for each student. It is also determined if the student requires additional resources (i.e. tutoring, counseling services)
IV. College Opportunities
All students in the program have an opportunity throughout the year to visit various colleges, either through formalized tours or informal visits. Running can be incorporated to nearby colleges.
IV. Events
Students have the opportunity to participate and compete in races and running related events that are citywide, usually during the weekends. They are able to complete races such as the NYC Marathon finish line, the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon in Coney Island, and many more. They also have the chance to volunteer at various events.
V. Incentives
NYRR provides the students with t-shirts, medals, running sneakers, and many other things for participation in the program.
